The eight-month project will add drainage and flood-defence measures around the hospital, including a sustainable urban drainage system and a detention basin to temporarily store excess rainwater. The basin will help regulate runoff during intense rainfall and reduce pressure on the surrounding drainage network.
The work follows the flooding experienced during the September 2019 storm, when water affected parts of the hospital and access along the CV-91. The hospital serves more than 183,000 people across 18 municipalities and has more than 2,000 staff.
The regional government says the improvements are intended to protect a key public service and help maintain access and operations during future episodes of torrential rain.
