Alicante hospital to tender new psychiatric unit with 10 beds
The Doctor Balmis University General Hospital in Alicante is tendering the technical work for a new psychiatric inpatient unit with 10 beds and round-the-clock mental-health emergency care.
The project, commissioned by the Valencian health department, will create a dedicated unit inside the hospital for patients in the Alicante-Hospital General health area. The planned facility will cover approximately 505 square metres, including an outdoor terrace.
The technical-design and works-supervision contract has a budget of more than €126,700, while the construction itself is estimated at €1.3 million. The new unit is intended to allow urgent psychiatric patients to be treated at their own reference hospital instead of being routinely transferred to Sant Joan d’Alacant, while cooperation between the departments will continue when clinical circumstances require it.
Sant Joan currently provides psychiatric inpatient care for patients from both health areas. During 2025 it dealt with 1,684 psychiatric emergencies from residents of the Alicante-Hospital General area, and 363 of its 772 psychiatric discharges involved those patients.
