Orihuela marks 250 years of the Monserrate sanctuary with a procession
Orihuela is preparing a special procession on Sunday 15 November to celebrate 250 years of its Monserrate sanctuary.
The city’s patron, the Virgen de Monserrate, will be taken from the cathedral through central Orihuela from 18:00. The event will conclude at the sanctuary with a service led by José Ignacio Munilla, bishop of the Orihuela-Alicante Diocese. The mayor is due to present a gold civic distinction to the image.
The anniversary event forms the culmination of the patron’s recent visits to local parishes. Organisers describe it as an opportunity to celebrate Orihuela’s heritage and the continuing importance of the tradition to local families.
