EU-UK deal could bring back multi-use pet passports

A planned EU-UK agreement could allow travellers from Great Britain to use multi-trip pet passports again, but the change is not expected until around mid-2027.

The package under discussion includes cooperation on food and animal standards, electricity-market access and a youth mobility scheme. If the sanitary and phytosanitary agreement is approved, authorised vets could once again issue pet passports valid for repeated EU journeys with dogs, cats and ferrets.

Since the UK left the EU, Great Britain has been treated as a non-EU country for pet travel. Owners currently need a new Animal Health Certificate for every trip to an EU country, while Northern Ireland remains within the EU pet travel scheme. The proposed arrangement would require the UK to follow EU rules on animal and food standards.

The package is due to be discussed at an EU-UK summit in Brussels on 20 November. Until any agreement takes effect, the existing certificate requirement remains in place.
