Barnier says Britain could return to EU without adopting the euro
Former EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier says Britain could negotiate a return to the European Union without adopting the euro, but membership of the single market would require accepting free movement.
Speaking to Sky News, Barnier said the UK could seek a new relationship with the EU without the usual obligation for new members to join the single currency. He stressed, however, that there could be no selective arrangement for the single market or customs union.
The four freedoms—movement of people, goods, services and capital—would have to be accepted. His comments follow renewed calls from British Prime Minister Andy Burnham for closer ties with Brussels. Any return would require negotiations with all 27 EU member states and approval of the terms by those countries.
